NEWS FLASH 1/30/99: Nikon has discontinued both the Coolpix 900S and the older Coolpix 900. If you Nikon will announce their new line on 2/18/99! If you find a source

quite a while for digital camera technology to catch up to the point where resolution, real optical zoom and autofocus, and a professional quality lens. It uses industry standard compact flash for flexible storage, and can be read on through any PC-Card (PCMCIA) slot, or you can upload via a serial port which is slower.

I guess the best way to see what the Coolpix 900 can do is to take a look at some of my pictures (after June 1998) to see. The Coolpix 900 is quite capable of taking pictures that look better than scanned prints, and rival Photo CD (Photo CD still is unbeatable on resolution).

It is hard to describe the convenience of a digital camera. After I take pictures, I can upload pictures right away to my web site. Then I can run a quick perl program I wrote and a few minutes later I have a full slideshow to drive anywhere to get film developed and then spend a lot of time scanning in prints with so-so results, or wait a week or more for Photo CD. It is also nice to be able to shoot away with no worries about paying extra for film or developing. If you shoot a terrible picture you just delete it and at worst waste a little time.

On August 5-17, 1998 I travelled to Hong Kong and Taiwan. My Nikon went with me as well as my Sony VAIO PCG-735 laptop computer. During the trip I uploaded personal "digital postcards" from my trip. Sort of an instant travelogue with pictures. Check it out on my Trip to Asia 1998 web page.
